Kia Niro Concept Revealed at Frankfurt Motor Show

Officially revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 10th, the quirky but gutsy Kia Niro concept signals great things to come in Kia’s future. The unique crossover concept is designed for the urban market and features a variant of Kia’s turbocharged 1.6-liter “Gamma” engine with hybrid electric drive.

In an official press release, Kia says that the Niro is prepared “for any challenge that the assured modern motorist may throw at it,” and it does it all with an unmistakably stylish streak. The Niro concept’s body reflects the design team’s goals to create a confident, muscular outline. The dark “Nightfall” exterior is appropriately striking and contrasts with the stainless steel roof. Running-board “blades” along the lower side sills give the model a sleek and hypnotic look.

Inside, the Niro features 2+2 seating with a spacious cargo deck. The butterfly doors make for easy access into the stylized interior, which features “Orbit Silver” line-quilted upholstery and “Volcano Black” leather on the front dash and binnacle. Features include a rearview camera, a center console-mounted screen, and two aluminum columns with controls.

No concrete plans have been made yet to commercially produce the Niro, but plans will be made if demand seems high enough. According to Gregory Guillaume, Chief Designer at Kia's Frankfurt office and head of the concept team, "As designers we have to look at what the future could hold, not just what is probable, and we believe drivers want excitement and new solutions from their vehicles.” The Niro is said to cater especially to European tastes, but would you be interested in seeing a U.S. model?
